Hamburger Soup

2 pounds ground beef
½ tsp. each: oregano, salt, pepper and basil
1 package Lipton onion soup mix
6 cups boiling water
1 8 ounce can tomato sauce
1 Tablespoon soy sauce
1 cup celery, sliced
¼ cup celery leaves, torn into pieces
1 cup carrots, sliced
½ cup dried split peas
1 cup elbow macaroni
Freshly Grated Parmesan cheese

In a large saucepan, or skillet with a tight fitting lid, brown meat.  Add salt, pepper, oregano, basil and soup mix.  Stir in boiling water, tomato sauce and soy sauce.  Cover and simmer 15 minutes.  Add all vegetables and dried peas and continue simmering for 30 minutes.  Add macaroni noodles and simmer for 30 minutes longer, adding more water if necessary.  Top servings with Parmesan cheese and serve with a good French bread.
